Carbon reduction is one of the focal points of this year's Summer Davos, which concluded on Thursday. Li Pengcheng, the executive president of China's Dairy Gaint, the Mengniu Group, sat down with CGTN's Zheng Chunying, to discuss green transformation opportunities and challenges.
ZHENG CHUNYING "Let's start with the theme of this year's Summer Davos. What do you make of the slogan?"
LI PENGCHENG Executive President, Mengniu Group "Enterprises are the cells of the society and entrepreneurship is of course the major driving force of the economy with entrepreneurial spirit also playing a vital role, which from my point of view means, being innovative, being confident and understanding comprehensively about the current economic policies and landscape."
ZHENG CHUNYING CGTN Reporter "Your company has always been striving to lead the industry on achieving China's dual carbon goals, tell us more about that."
LI PENGCHENG Executive President, Mengniu Group "We have already implemented many successful projects involving energy conservation and emission reduction, supporting our dual-carbon strategy. In the upstream, we have integrated carbon reduction across all aspects of production and operations and established a green low-carbon ecosystem by reducing carbon emissions from 'Planting, Rearing and Processing'. In the downstream, Mengniu is the first in the industry to realize the recycling of plastic packaging."
ZHENG CHUNYING CGTN Reporter "The dairy industry is responsible for the highest proportion of carbon emissions produced by the agricultural sector. What are some of the challenges and opportunities do you see in the sector when it comes to sustainable development?"
LI PENGCHENG Executive President, Mengniu Group "There are of course opportunities, thanks to the government's supportive policies and the development of innovative technologies, but challenges remain in reducing methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to our current climate crisis and that directly comes from the mouths of dairy animals. And because of the long production line of dairy industry, there's long way for us to go to achieve green transformation."
ZHENG CHUNYING CGTN Reporter "This year marks the 10th anniversary of China's Belt and Road Initiative, tell us how your company has been embracing the strategy?"
LI PENGCHENG Executive President, Mengniu Group "The Belt and Road Initiative has brought many business opportunities. For example we've built our first manufacturing factory in Indonesia, one of the members of the Initiative, where we managed to provide products that cater to the local market and we also opened a formula plant in New Zealand, and in the future, we are also interested in investing more projects to achieve win-win benefits for all."
